Let's walk through this map for a secDates on the blast door map (other dates in italics) 1980 – Dharma orientation video made 12/07/81 - Date of H.G. Delegation inspection (assumed at Swan station) 10/28/84 - Date of suspected shutdown 1985 - AH/MDG incident 1988 – Danielle and her crew arrive on the island 04/08/00 - Date of System wide failure of Dharmatel Intranet 08/15/01 - Date of System wide failure of Dharmatel Intranet 2001 – Desmond crashes on the island 04/03/02 - Revision date to finding the possible location of Zoological Research Facility 01/06/03 - Date of System wide failure of Dharmatel Intranet 09/22/04 – suspected crash date of Flight 815 P.RD.: every 6-8 months (or 183-244 days) Facts (if everyone was truthful) Desmond claims to have crashed on the island 3 years ago(1095 days or 14600 button pushes ago) or 2001. Desmond meets Kelvin at this time. Kelvin dies waiting for replacements. Between times given over the loudspeaker (20min. - 17min.) Locke sees the countdown timer at 47 minutes. We can deduce the blast doors were down for approximately for 30 minutes. Thoughts Desmond said that "Kelvin died waiting for replacements." This doesn't necessarily mean he died of old age, or at the hatch for that matter. The map was drawn on the inside of the blast door. If the door always comes down in unison with the countdown clock, then there must of been 2 people in the hatch. One to push the button, and one to draw the map. But not necessarily. If it were one, then that one person may have used the vents like Henry did to push the buttons. According to the map (Estimated travel time incompatible with 108 Do not attempt to journey), it appears the mapmaker went out between the button pushes to explore. According to the orientation video. 2 people are stationed every 540 days (about 1 1/2 years, 7200 button pushes). Kelvin was in the hatch by himself, so where was the other guy? There is nothing on the map mentioning Danielle’s group. Days between the noted system wide failure – 495 and 509 days. (difference of 2 weeks) Project it out and we get (we’ll go 502 days) 5/21/2004 then 10/04/2005.. Strange that the film dated 1980 mentions an incident. The map mentions an incident in 1985. Maybe different incidents? Conclusion Kelvin is the mapmaker. He arrived on the island as a replacement between 1988 and 2000. I’m thinking early 90’s. He arrived alone. Before 1988 something went wrong on the island. Kelvin was a Dharmite, but most likely knew only what his expertise was, electromagnetic studies. The research on the island was most likely very secretive. Everyone was on a ‘need to know’ basis. After he arrived, and realized something was wrong, he went exploring. He took notes, and after some time exploring, he realized that his life was in danger. He decided to hide his notes, scribbling them onto the back of a blackdoor in ink only able to be seen under a black light. In 2001 on one of his explorations, he see a shipwrecked Desmond. He enrolls him into helping him push the button. He tells him the secret message for their replacements (What did one snowman say to the other snowman?) if they should arrive. He tells Desmond that he will go out looking for their replacements, and Desmond would stick around to push the button, and wait if they should arrive at the hatch. One day Kelvin doesn’t come back. We don’t know if he left and died, or stood Desmond up. So when Desmond said, “He died waiting for replacements”, it was the truth. Sidenotes I’m not so sure what Claire ‘remembered’ was necessarily true. The blast map said the Caduceus Hatch was abandoned due to the AH/MDG incident. Even if it wasn’t because of it, it was abandoned before the Losties arrived on the island. If you look at the walls, there are shadowed marks on the wall where stuff was hanging. I doubt that this could happen in even a months time. My guess is that whatever she was drugged with, she imagined the prettiness of the hatch. The only thing that may have been real was clean shaven Zeke, Ethan, and Alex. Well I have a theory on Alex, but for now I’ll say she was really there. |

Here's an overlay of the map that appeared on the blast door that pinned John down. Some interesting things on it, especially at the bottom: "every 6-8 months" and "fatalities: 5" |
