Maybe because you have to plug a coaxial to it. You're adding a (possible) cable to your machine. Power, Phone, Cable, and it's all coming from 3 sources that isn't always close to each other in the wall. That's my guess. Not a very good one though.

Why do you still, in this day and age, need an external cable modem? Why don't you just buy an internal PCI cable model like you do with internal phone modems, or networks cards? It seems to me that you could just get the cable modem card, plug it in, and have no need for ethernet cables for that machine's internet connectivity. Then, if you need to share the internet, just use the old network card you had, and push that out to a hub/switch and turn on iptables/internet sharing.
