Well, if it's true hardware RAID, it'll just show up as a single drive anyway, so it'll be cool.

I'm thinking about replace the mobo with this guy, since my on board SATA controllers are failing.

most raid setups are pretty easy if its built into the motherboard....if not you need a raid controller. but its usually a command like f12 while you are booting...and its usually a pretty self explanatory graphical interface. but without specifics its hard to say cause its different for every motherboard.

this might help you a lil bit
Quade
[quote]Posted: Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 4:22 pm EDT
Anyone have any experience with RAID setups?

I need to set up a RAID 5 system. It needs a minimum of 3 drives. I have 4 that can go into it, but I've seen diagrams that show up to 5. I want to max it out so I don't have to worry about expanding later. (If I want to expand later, I'll replace the entire array -- 1TB drives are ~$130 now...ridiculous).

Also, what's a good card?

these days your pretty much screwed when it comes to AGP cards....your best option for AGP is to find an old nVidia 7900 GT 512mb memory.....that is prob the fastest you will find in AGP.....everything else has gone to PCI express.

My dad has a router that my laptop can pickup and use the "Very Low" signal, but my PS3 requires a better signal. What is the cheapest (not homemade) method I can use to boost my dads signal. I can boost it at the sending in, but rather boost it at the receiving end. Is there something I could use to hop the signal? Something I could hook up to my PC?

Cable companies lie?!!!?? That's crazy talk!!! Hehe. I've never had a problem with internet service, speed-wise. I just don't know what I have been experiencing. I'm guessing 1.5mps. It seems to be the cheapest one too. I've got phone/internet/cable with Cox. I've got an HD-DVR and a couple of premium channels, I think. Here is what I'm looking to do.

ATT wireless and internet / Cox cable

or

ATT wireless / Cox cable and internet

Whichever is cheaper.
Quade
[quote]Posted: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 3:28 pm EDT
Also, keep in mind that telecommunications companies (AT&T, Comcast, Cox, AOL, etc), all fucking lie.

25x faster than what? And is that upload speed? Or only download?

56.6K physically (and I think, legally) maxes at ~48K, which is the same as 0.048Mbps. 0.048x25 is ~1.2Kbps. If they take "advertised" speeds (the 56.6K, and like they do with hard drive capacities), they can promise you speeds up to 1.4Mbps (which can then be rounded to 1.5Mbps). You'll probably see about half of that during regular surfing hours. And your upstream will probably be something like 128-256K.

But anything will be faster than dialup. Significantly. Just keep in mind they're still lying to you.
DelMonte
[quote]Posted: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 2:52 pm EDT
I have the slower Cox, 1.5Mbps I think and it has worked just fine. Would that be about 27 times faster than dial up? I'm not sure. I pay $26.95/month.

Wages could tell you for sure about the speed, he has the same thing. This probably goes without saying, but he loves Cox.
Dr. Pooh
[quote]Posted: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 1:36 pm EDT
Ok, we know that internet service is faster than dial-up. Duh. They divide their plans by how many times faster the service is than dial up. Base level is 25X faster. We are well past dialup days, so I want to know, can I get basic service? Is 25X still pretty damn fast?

I'm planning on taking the 5-port (I'd be happy with just 2 ports even) and putting it in the entertainment center. I'll plug in my Myth box and WAP (since the entertainment center is more central to the house, I'll get better coverage with the laptop). The other switch will go in the office.

this is the tuner card I have. I have it pluged stright into my dishnet reciver and can record shows from it. It came with all the software it needs to tvguide and setup timers and it does all the encoding on the hardwear side so it takes lees cpu power to to it. now viewing hd content takes a bit of the cpu but thats different.

I *think* though that it will only record the chennel I have it tuned to for my dish, but with my local channels I can tell it which one. The card has 2 coax in so I can have cable and locals in at the same time, but from dish I use svideo in on the card.

Oh and a bonus the remote works with mediaportal so I dont have to use the kboard and mouse...

[quote]Posted: Monday, February 19, 2007 at 1:37 pm EST
Yeah, that's what I'm wanting to do -- build a mythbox with an HD card. Although, somebody was telling me about connecting straight through to the cable box via firewire and pulling the stream digitally that way. Though, I think the card's the best way to go -- that's the only way you'll get hardware encoding.

But hdd space is cheap now. You can get a few hundred gigs for less than $150 now.

According to this article, all I have to do is wait a couple of months. Maybe build a HTPC while I wait. I wasn't really thinking about getting HD content via web, but now that you mention it.... I was more interested in just using it as a DVR for shows I can get through my cable provider.

I use usenet and nzb files to get all my hd content to my htpc. I also did not want a hd-dvr so I built a htpc box useing mediaportal and windows xp. I have a hd tuner card also so I can record my hd shows, but I dont have a very larg hdd in it so I don't do that yet, sicne recoding them = 5+gigs and downloading them from someone else <= 1 gig files...

This also works great as a video on demand service, I can load up some movies on there and watch them when I can, the delete them after I see them.

I suggest being wary about buying a Compaq/HP laptop. My power connecter died in the pc and I spent 30 bones plus 160 labor to get it replaced. It required a total dismantle and soldering. Yeah I got ripped off but I couldn't find anybody to even attempt it. It happened again 3 months later and they only guarantee their work for 1 month. I decided to take on the task myself and bought a solder gun. I noticed from an internet search, several people have had this problem.

It took about two hours, but the son of a bitch works now. I'm so stoked.

I need some round, in-ceiling speakers for my rear surrond sound channels. I am having a hard time finding a good rating system for these types of speakers. I'd prefer to spend no more than $150 for the pair and it would be cool if I could pick them up locally (like best buy or circuit city) but if their is a better set I can only get online I'll wait. A lot of these produce stereo sound out of a single speaker...that is not a necessary feature for me.

The first thing I would do is backup your profile, by adding a bkup to the file name, reboot and relogin to the machine. thus letting it build a new profile. if your not useing log in to your machine, then turn it on and create a new profile... then delete it and turn it off..

run microsoft anti spyware beta 1(free from the msoft site)
run the new stinger..

if your running XP formatting should be your last resort. let me know how that stuff works out and if you have any errors I would also check the eror log on the computer

[quote]Posted: Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at 7:05 am EDT
Sounds like your IE got hosed. That happened on my work laptop -- clicking on links would open a new IE window, but not open the page in it, and hotkeys didn't work. I tried reinstalling IE from MS's site, but it kept telling me that I had a newer version of IE (I had installed IE7b by this time), and wouldn't continue.

The only recourse was to reformat/reinstall windows.

If you're not ready for that, I'd recommend using a different browser for the time being, like Firefox or Opera (both are really good browsers). That might buy you enough time to still be able to surf, etc., and backup your machine.

I agree with quade, or use an app like ghost and make images of your hdd that you can go back to at any point. The latter is what I do, so whn I havea problem, I can install a new drive, run ghost and everything is identacle to how it was...

as a completely personal opinion, i wouldn't sugget using the windows backup software -- instead, i'd suggest copying everything that you can onto your backup drive. things like your "documents and settings" directory (that'll include profile information, your desktop, application data, which will have your e-mail, etc...).

So you think I'm safe to use Windows backup software?

I'd recommend building it yourself:
A 300gb hard drive and enclosure

(of course, you can probably find the same thing for around the same price at newegg)

You could also find a place that can custom make something for you to slide a gel in or whatever. Just draw something up with exact dimensions, and give it to them. You can have it made out of aluminum. Not sure how much it will cost though. Call around. Look up metal fabricators in the phone book. If you give me a sketch of what you need, I can draw it up for you in AutoCad, and you can use that to send them.
